Frequently asked questions

Find calm and clear answers about lighting, keeping and sharing a candle.

Lighting a candle

Is lighting a candle free?

Yes. Lighting a candle is free and no account is needed. If you would like to help with the costs of the site, you can do so voluntarily; a contribution does not buy extra visibility or a longer burning time.

How long will my candle burn?

You choose 24 hours or a lasting candle. A lasting candle burns until you remove it. After 24 hours the candle goes out, but it stays visible as an extinguished candle. With your management link you can relight it — for another 24 hours, or permanently.

Can I keep my candle private?

Yes. A private candle does not appear in the public gallery. Only people with your personal link can view it, and the photo is shielded too.

Can I add a photo?

Yes. You can upload a photo while creating the candle; it is shown together with the candlelight and your memory. Later you can replace the photo through your management link, or remove just the photo.

Can I edit the text later?

Yes. With your management link you can correct the name, the memory and the sender, and add dates and places of birth and death. One typo is no reason to start over.

Sharing and managing

How do I share a candle?

After lighting it, you receive a personal share button. You can send the link through the apps on your device, or copy it. The candle page also shows a QR code you can display or download.

Can I remove my candle later?

Yes. After creating it you receive a personal management link. Keep it safe: it lets you view, edit or remove your candle later. Without it we cannot find your candle for you.

I lost my management link, what now?

On the same computer or phone you can find your candle again through My candles in the menu: that page remembers what you lit on this device. If you switched devices and did not save the link, we cannot find your candle for you, because we do not record who lit which candle. Contact us if something needs to be removed.

The book of condolence

What is the difference between a candle and a book of condolence?

You light a candle yourself, for one person. You open a book of condolence when you want to invite others to share their sympathy: family, friends and colleagues light a candle there and leave a message. You read the messages first and decide what becomes visible. It is what a funeral director offers too, but free and without an account.

Who can view a book of condolence?

That is up to you as its keeper: public, only through the link, or protected with an access code. You can change that choice at any time in the settings. A public book also appears in the site's overview of public books.

Can we give the book its own look?

Yes. As the keeper you add a portrait and choose a cover photo behind the heading: your own photo or one of the included backgrounds. A colour photo can be turned black and white if you wish, and you fill in the life details with full dates and places.

What can visitors do in a book?

They light a candle with a message of condolence or a memory, or just a candle without a message. As the keeper you can reply to messages with a short word of thanks, and there is room for funeral information and a livestream link for those who cannot be there.

Can we keep or print the book?

Yes. As the keeper you can open the memorial book: all candles and messages laid out as a book, to save as a PDF or print — a lasting keepsake for the family.

Can we remove a book?

Yes, at the bottom of the settings. The book immediately becomes invisible to everyone. Within thirty days we can still restore it; after that the data is permanently erased.

Privacy and safety

Which candles appear in the gallery?

Only public candles appear in the gallery, from all languages together. Use the search field to find a candle by name.

What can I do about an inappropriate candle?

Open the candle and choose report. You can also contact us if you want to explain something or need help.

What happens to my data?

As little as possible. There is no account, we show no advertising and we sell nothing on. If you remove a candle or a book, it becomes invisible at once and we permanently erase the data within thirty days. The privacy notice tells you everything.
